Wolfork Recipes, Knowledge Base

No, that's not necessary. Variety is often something that we humans find important, but it's not really needed. Of course, it's allowed! All our recipes contain different types of meat, vegetables and fruit. So your dog gets sufficient variety. Moreover, our food is formulated to contain all the daily required nutrients.

Not all ingredients are organic, but we consciously choose organic where it is possible and makes sense. Some ingredients, such as lamb or beef, can only be bought organically in larger quantities outside Europe. Given the high footprint and thus the high environmental impact, this is not a sustainable option. In this case, we therefore choose non-organic products that come from Europe.

All meat used in Wolfork dog food comes from EU-approved slaughterhouses where animals fit for human consumption are slaughtered. On our website, you can see exactly where each ingredient comes from.

Yes, Wolfork dog food meets all requirements according to FEDIAF guidelines. Please note: the vitamin E content in our food is lower than the set FEDIAF standard. This is because FEDIAF assumes synthetic vitamins, while we only use natural vitamins. Each vitamin is composed of different compounds. Not every compound can be absorbed by the body. Vitamin E from natural ingredients is almost entirely absorbable by the body. Synthetic vitamin E, on the other hand, is only absorbed by about 16%. If you look at the absorption of vitamin E in the body, our values meet the FEDIAF guidelines.

Wolfork is produced in Opmeer, North Holland, at an EC-approved production facility.

Raw meat contains many, but not all, of the necessary nutrients. To provide your dog with all the necessary nutrients, we supplement raw meat with fruits and vegetables, which are richer in antioxidants than meat. This way, we can guarantee a complete and balanced meal.

Yes, all Wolfork recipes have been carefully formulated by nutritionists and comply with the FEDIAF guidelines for complete feed. Each meal contains the correct balance of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fats that your dog needs daily. Therefore, there is no need to supplement.

There are many misconceptions about the causes of allergic reactions in dogs. That's why we've written a blogabout it. Wolfork contains no grains, corn, or soy – the most common causes of food intolerances in dogs. With animal proteins, reactions can also be influenced by processing and heating. This changes the structure of proteins, which can affect digestibility and how the body reacts to them. Unprocessed, raw proteins are often well tolerated in practice. If you still prefer to avoid certain animal species, we also offer recipes without chicken and without beef.

Yes, with tailored recipes for puppy, adult, and senior, we ensure your dog is optimally supported at every stage of life.

Yes, pregnant and lactating dogs have specific nutritional needs. Our Pregnant & Lactating formula optimally supports this phase.

No, all Wolfork recipes are 100% gluten-free. Our dog food consists only of raw meat, fresh vegetables and fruits, fish oil, and yeast. No grains or other fillers are added.

No, preservatives are not used. Wolfork dog food consists of 100% raw meat, fresh vegetables and fruit, fish oil, and yeast.

No, all vitamins and minerals in Wolfork are obtained from natural ingredients.

No, Wolfork dog food only uses natural ingredients. Therefore, nothing extra is added.

No, we do not use GMO ingredients in our meals.

Bones are a natural source of calcium, phosphorus, vitamins, fatty acids, and minerals. This makes them an essential part of a dog's diet. Unlike cooked bones, raw bones do not splinter and can therefore be consumed without risk.

No, we do not use pork in the composition of our recipes. Raw pork can transmit Aujeszky's disease, which can be fatal to dogs.

A Wolfork meal contains at least 88% raw meat. The exact percentage varies per recipe and can be found on our product page.

We pay the utmost attention to the quality of our dog food. That is why we regularly have our food tested by an independent and accredited laboratory for the required nutritional value and the absence of unwanted bacteria.

The variety of ingredients from different animal species provides a diversity of nutrients, ensuring your dog receives a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Because we derive all our nutritional value directly from the ingredients – without using pre-mixes – we draw our strength directly from this natural variety. Additionally, the use of multiple protein sources contributes to a diverse and healthy microbiome (gut flora), which optimally supports the immune system.

Sensitive food refers to easily digestible dog food, specifically for dogs with a sensitive stomach or digestion. Our recipes are naturally easy to digest because they are 100% natural and unprocessed and contain no artificial additives. The purer and less processed the food, the better it is absorbed and utilized by the body.

Not all ingredients. The yeast and fish oil we use are specially developed for animal feed. However, all meat ingredients come from EU-approved production sites. The vegetables, fruit and seaweed that we process in Wolfork are also suitable for human consumption.

If you are unable to feed raw, you can opt for a high-quality kibble. Look for a high proportion of animal protein and a low carbohydrate content. Sign up for our newsletter to be the first to know about new product developments.

The protein percentage in raw food is lower than in kibble, but these cannot be compared one-to-one. Fresh meat naturally contains 70–75% moisture, while kibble loses almost all its moisture during the production process and is therefore more concentrated. According to labeling rules, protein is expressed as a percentage of the total product, which makes the protein content in kibble appear higher. In addition, the quality of proteins plays an important role: heating changes the structure of proteins and can reduce digestibility. Raw meat naturally contains easily absorbable animal proteins, while kibble often partly consists of vegetable proteins that are less digestible for dogs.

No, your dog's breath will actually smell better. Our meals do not contain added sugars in the form of carbohydrates, which means your dog will suffer less from plaque and tartar. If you want to know more about this, please read our blog.

That varies per dog. In most dogs, improvements are visible after just a few weeks, such as a softer coat, less stool, and more energy. The most significant changes usually occur within four to eight weeks.

No, raw meat is actually good for a dog's teeth. Raw food does not contain sugars in the form of carbohydrates, which reduces the rate at which plaque and tartar form. Kibble contains starch and carbohydrates that are partly converted into sugars during heating, which contributes to the formation of plaque. If you want to know more about this, you can also read our blog.

No. Dogs primarily contract worms through contact with infected faeces, contaminated soil, prey animals, or by drinking from puddles and ditches in nature, not through raw meat from approved slaughterhouses. Wolfork meals are flash-frozen with nitrogen (-180C) and stored deep-frozen; with the correct freezing duration, any parasites and most eggs are rendered harmless. Therefore, there is no increased risk of worms from eating Wolfork meals.

Heated bones can splinter, making them unsuitable for your dog. Raw bones, however, do not splinter and provide a source of calcium, phosphorus, vitamins, fatty acids, and minerals. They are therefore good for your dog.

Yes, that's right. Because our food contains no fillers and nutrients are efficiently absorbed by the body, there is less residual material. This often results in less, firmer, and less odorous stool.

Yes, that's correct. Moisture in food is absorbed better by body cells than pure water. Meat naturally contains meat juices (metabolic water) which are composed of various vitamins and minerals that directly nourish the cells. This ensures that your dog gets thirsty less quickly – so he will drink less and therefore also urinate less. Kibble contains almost no moisture, causing your dog to drink more water and therefore urinate more.

Raw food optimally matches the natural diet of a dog. Wolfork meals consist of fresh, unprocessed meat, vegetables, and fruit, fitting within a natural, varied diet. The connection between fresh feeding and dog health is being observationally studied by DogRisk (University of Helsinki). Furthermore, we do not use pre-mixes: we derive all nutritional values directly from the ingredients themselves, without synthetic additives. Read more in ourknowledge base.

Many essential vitamins, minerals, and proteins are lost during the heating process. For example, a cooked cauliflower contains fewer nutrients than a raw cauliflower. To ensure optimal quality, digestibility, and absorption of nutrients, consuming food raw is best.

Research shows that feeding raw meat offers many health benefits to dogs. For example, dogs with allergies, chronic ear infections, skin conditions, or intestinal problems can respond very positively to Wolfork dog food. Ask us for feeding adviceor contact us if you are unsure whether you can feed Wolfork to your dog.

For dogs, it's the same as for humans: they can lose weight by restricting their energy intake and exercising more. Ask us for nutritional adviceto determine your dog's correct energy requirements and lose weight healthily. Our diet formulation allows you to do this responsibly, ensuring your dog still gets all the nutrients they need daily.

If a dog's digestive system is working optimally and the correct food is given, a dog should produce small, firm, dark, and less odorous stools.

That is correct. The digestive system contains billions of organisms that are part of the microbiome. A dog cannot survive without good bacteria. The intestinal lining ensures that pathogens and toxins do not enter the bloodstream.

Diabetes can have various causes, such as genetic predisposition, age, and obesity. Nutrition plays a supporting role: a diet high in sugars and starches can increase the risk. Wolfork dog food is naturally low in sugars and free from added sugars.

Formulating meals yourself requires a lot of knowledge, skill, and time. There's a high chance your dog will get too many or too few nutrients. Wolfork meals are carefully formulated to precisely meet the right nutritional needs.

This depends on the composition of the feed. Soy and grains, among others, are among the most common nutrients that cause allergies. At Wolfork, we do not use these ingredients, unlike many kibble producers. The presence of the right balance of good nutrients in the diet can prevent or resolve many complaints.

Yes, as long as the food is complete and contains enough calcium and chondroitin to support bones, joints and cartilage. These substances occur naturally in, among other things, raw bones, which we use when composing our meals.

Yes, because many intestinal complaints are caused by indigestible carbohydrates from grains and starches. Our meals contain very low amounts of carbohydrates, and exclusively from vegetables, which are easily digestible.

Yes, because our food is unprocessed and contains no food allergens like grains and soy, unlike most kibble. If you want more information, do not hesitate to contactus or read our blog.

You can occasionally give your dog a little something extra, but don't do it too often. Wolfork is a complete meal – so your dog doesn't need anything extra. Everything you give extra is added to the daily energy requirements.

If your dog is underweight, he consumes more energy daily than he takes in. No two dogs are the same; therefore, observe his body condition carefully and provide extra food (temporarily) until your dog regains his ideal body shape. You can also request our feeding adviceto determine your dog's correct energy requirements.

No, raw meat is not dangerous for a dog. A dog's digestive system is specifically designed to optimally digest raw food and absorb all nutrients.

No, the idea that dogs become aggressive or bloodthirsty from raw meat is a myth. There are no studies or scientific evidence to suggest that a dog's behavior is negatively affected by eating raw meat. In fact, we are convinced that your dog's energy levels are more balanced when they are fed a raw diet.

Many veterinarians and breeders are concerned that if people start preparing raw meals themselves, their dog may not receive all the necessary nutrients. This can lead to deficiencies that ultimately cause health problems. We understand this concern, which is why Wolfork dog food is carefully formulated by nutritional scientists. This way, you can be sure that your dog receives all the necessary nutrients daily.

Safe and proper feeding

Feeding advice, safe feeding

The daily portion depends on your dog's weight, age, and activity level. As a general guideline for adult dogs, 2% of body weight per day applies. Some dogs need a little more, while others need a little less. Therefore, use our free feeding advice for personalized advice.

Since our food is complete and balanced, there is no need to alternate recipes. Our meals consist of multiple animal species, ensuring your dog already gets enough variety. The use of different protein sources provides extra good support for the microbiome.

Raw food still contains its natural moisture (metabolic water), unlike kibble where most of the moisture is lost due to heating. This metabolic water is full of vitamins and minerals that are directly fed to the cells – plain drinking water does not reach the body's cells in the same way. This also results in less thirst and thus less need to urinate.

It is possible to feed your dog both fresh meat and kibble. Scientific researchshows that a diet with 30–50% fresh meat already offers health benefits for dogs. Also check out our blogfor more information about mixed feeding.

Raw dog food is no more or less dangerous than preparing raw meat for your own meals. Observe standard safety precautions to prevent contamination: wash your hands thoroughly before and after preparation, and carefully clean all used materials with warm water and soap. Also clean surfaces that have come into contact with the food.

Take a portion out of the freezer 6 hours in advance. Store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Once thawed, you can put the meal in your dog's bowl. Make sure all materials, surfaces, and hands that have been in contact with raw meat are thoroughly cleaned. See also our feeding advice.

As with any new food, we recommend a gradual transition so that your dog's digestive system can slowly adjust. Replace a quarter of the current food with Wolfork daily. After 4 days, you can feed your dog a full portion of Wolfork. See also our adviceon how best to switch.

No, once the meal is thawed, you can feed it to your dog. Heating the meal will actually cause important nutrients to be lost.

No, heating the meal in the microwave causes important nutrients to be lost. Always thaw the meal slowly in the refrigerator.

Does this sound familiar? Your dog enjoys our food when it's fresh out of the fridge but turns their nose up at it once it reaches room temperature. This is completely normal and actually a good sign. Raw food contains natural unsaturated fatty acids and fish oil. These are valuable nutrients, but they are also sensitive to heat and air. As soon as the food warms up, slight odors are released that dogs, with their keen sense of smell, perceive much more strongly than we do. For their sense of smell, the scent then shifts from "fresh" to "less fresh," even though the product is still perfectly fine. Additionally, the texture softens and releases moisture, which many dogs find less appealing than a cold, crisp bite. So, your dog being picky about this doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the food. On the contrary: it shows that our food is pure and natural, without artificial fragrances or flavor enhancers that would mask such a natural instinct.
